Govt of India might extend the tenure of CBI and ED up to 5 years

On November 14, the Government of India proclaimed two ordinances to extend the tenure of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) for up to five years. The current tenure is fixed for two years. However, they cannot be removed from their office before their tenure ends. No extension can be granted after a period of five years.

The Central Vigilance Commission (Amendment) Ordinance, 2021, and the Delhi Special Police Establishment (Amendment) Ordinance, 2021, the central government proclaimed on November 14 (Sunday). As per the ordinance, both the chiefs can be appointed for a period of two years, the tenure can be extended for up to three more years if needed. The tenures can be extended by one year at a time if the concerned selection committee approves the extension.

The Delhi Special Police Establishment (Amendment) Ordinance, 2021 features a similar amendment.
