The central govt can’t appoint Chief Election Commissioner single-handedly
The process to appoint the Chief Election Commissioner is changed from now on. A petition has been filed to form a collegium to appoint a chief election commissioner and election commissioners. Five members constitutional bench of the Supreme Court gave a verdict on the petition. The constitutional bench was headed by Justice KM Joseph, which gave a unanimous decision. The constitutional bench said that the country’s chief election commissioner cannot be appointed by the central government single-handedly. The bench said that the election commission must be independent, direct appointment is wrong.
