WHO said Delta is more dangerous than Omicron COVID 19 variant

On December 3, the technical lead of COVID 19, Maria Van Kerhove said that the Omicron COVID 19 variant has been detected in 38 countries and there is increased transmissibility of Omicron. However, the Delta strain remains the dominant variant of COVID 19. Kerhove said that Omicron is not different from the other strains of SARS COVID. The World Health Organisation also warned that there is a possible increase in detected infections in the next couple of weeks.

Studies to gauge Omicron’s transmissibility, severity, clinical presentation, response to other available countermeasures, etc. are in progress. There could be a surge in cases due to the higher transmissibility and potential immune escape. WHO South-East Asia region said that surge in cases may pose irresistible demand on health care systems and may lead to morbidity and mortality.
